Nostarenya; my birthday
I had a good birthday. The night before Stephanie had given me her present, a copy of George Eliot's Silas Marner. On my birthday proper I got a card from Sarah (who left for home the next day), a card from Laura, a card from Fima and Liz (who have gotten me a present but haven't given it to me because Liz was visiting a friend in Heidelburg (sp?)), and a card and a bar of chocolate from Not-Scary-Steve. I borrowed Lindsey's university gown so that I could get in free to see the St. Andrews castle in the morning. I wore it as a fourth year student -- hanging low off of both shoulders.
The castle was awesome. I often see it from unen, the rock on the beach where I sometimes eat my lunch between classes, weather permitting. I got to walk all over the castle, inside and out. I used up the last of my film. A lot of the castle has crumbled, but I got to climb up a couple of towers, to step into what was probably a bishop's living appartments, and to see the Bottle Dungeon -- so named because of it's round opening from the top. The neatest thing I got to do was crawl around in a mine once dug by assailants to the castle trying to weaken one of the outer walls. The castle defenders dug a counter-mine to intercept them. The passage was wet and dirty, so I took off Linsey's gown. There were lights, but they were not turned on. It was almost cooler that way. Parts of the passage were nearly pitch black.
In the afternoon Sarah went with me to rent some movies to watch in Steve's room. We rented Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, The Importance of Being Earnest, and Amadeus -- quite a range there. And we watched them all.
The next day, Sunday, there was a carol service with a lot of students in attendance. Lindsey, Laura, Fima, Steve, and I went early to get a seat, and Stephanie sang with the choir. It was really nice. Afterwards we went to the David Russel Hall Christmas party at a pub/theater. I bought a disposable camera and took some pictures of people I wanted to remember from the trip.
I have only five days left in the UK. I am glad to be coming home, but I am sad to be leaving.
